INTEGRATING DIGITAL TWINS FOR ROBUST CONTROL STRATEGIES AND REAL TIME RELEASE - CHRISTOPH HERWIG Professor for Bioprocess Engineering, VIENNA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY)

We witnessed an interesting talk about the digitalization process and its current hurdles in the bioprocessing sector. The talk addressed an ongoing process where traditional end-point measurements based on analytical processes are transitioning towards real-time automatic controlled processes with more flexible process parameters. Combining data from different analytical sources for the generation of a value generating digital model was highlighted as a big challenge in current industrial environments.

EXPERTISE IN ASSESSING CELL THERAPY EFFICACY USING POTENCY OR SURROGATE ASSAY - STÉPHANE DENÉPOUX Immunologist, Cell & Gene Therapy Solutions Manager, SOLVIAS)

Solvias is a Swiss-based CRO for cell and gene therapy (CGT) with a great know-how in potency assessment of therapeutic drug products. Mr. Denépoux thoroughly represented the regulatory and technical challenges in the CGT area, such as limited sample availability, short available manufacturing times, as well as missing reference standards. Assessing final product potency is a tedious process in these conditions, a challenge that Solvias tries to address by optimizing and expanding existing assays, while offering their solution to the top notch cell therapy companies.

GLOBAL BIOPHARMA MARKET TRENDS: HEALTH AUTHORITY UPDATE, QUALITY CONTROL INNOVATION AND SPR VALIDATION GUIDELINE REVIEW - Fredrik Sundberg Global Director Strategic Customer Relations at Cytiva)

Mr. Sundberg presented the benefits of an analytical toolbox for up and downstream bioprocessing. The possibilities of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as a possibility to characterize biosimilars during the development phase regarding target binding was underscored, as well as immunogenicity and QC of the product. He presented a comparison-based approach with the SPR binding data, indicating the deviation to a defined standard binding curve. Enabling use of SPR for people with less scientific SPR expertise in the area was a particularly interesting idea.

WHICH CHO CELL IS THE RIGHT CHO CELL FOR MANUFACTURING; LOUIS BOON - Chief Scientific Officer and Board member, JJP BIOLOGICS

The production optimization of biosimilars in respect to an economic view was presented by Mr. Boon from JJP biologics (former affiliated with Polpharma). Here, an industry case where intense literature research combined with scientific expertise led to a highly optimized production process of an antibody based therapeutic produced by CHO cells was presented. With that approach, the product titer could be increased significantly, making the product ultimately more profitable.

Company presentations

Parallel to many more fascinating scientific talks, a small but strong group of companies presented their instruments. Besides nova biomedical, Cytena also presented their entire instrument portfolio for the cell selection and cultivation workflow, starting with cell separation, plate washing, and finally live cell-culture imaging. Additionally, the iDot instrument, which was not part of the booth, made a lasting impression. It can be used for flexible spot-based surface modifications by controlled droplet formation on a well-plate, but also on standard glass substrates. If you are searching for a solution to greatly simplify paperwork, we highly recommend the product form MyCellHub, specially designed to meet the requirements of GMP compliant bioprocess documentation.
